WHAT THE PRESS SAYS ABOUT Grupo Cha Cha

  • “Don’t let the name fool you: there’s plenty more than “cha-cha-cha” to the music that Lise Gilly and her band have crafted.....The rhythms stretch clear across the Latin Jazz landscape, from choro to son to mambo and rhumba and beyond,….buckle up and prepare for an ear-grabbing journey of Latin Jazz!”~Neil Tesser, GRAMMY award winning Jazz Writer, www.examiner.com

  • "Grupo Cha Cha delivers a strong collection of Latin Jazz...... filled with a tipico foundation, a danceable salsa flavoring, a solid connection to jazz, and a bluesy flair, reflective of their Chicago experience.  There’s no doubt that the musicians have a good deal of experience with Cuban and Brazilian styles, as reflected in everything from their driving rhythmic feel to their improvisational comfort over different rhythmic backgrounds."~Chip Boaz, Latin Jazz Corner

ABOUT LISE GILLY

Lise M. Gilly, a native of Washington, D.C., came to Chicago via Miami. Ms. Gilly completed her Bachelor of Music, Music Education Major at the University of Miami, Florida, where she graduated Cum Laude. Upon her arrival in Chicago, she became a music educator in the Chicago Public Schools and started a successful freelance career playing private events, musicals and in the many regional orchestras in Chicagoland.  Her educational career specialized in multicultural education, drama, and included directing bands and orchestras.
Ms. Gilly continued her performance studies at Roosevelt University where she received a Master of Music, Summa Cum Laude in Flute Performance. Her major teachers were Jean Berkenstock, principal flute of Lyric Opera Chicago and the Grant Park Symphony, and Richard Graef, Associate Principal Flute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

She was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in the 2000-2001 season and has been the 2nd Flute/Piccolo player for the Kenosha Symphony since 1997. Her flute masterclass experience includes James Galway, Walfrid Kujala, Ali Ryerson, Donald Peck, Bonita Boyd, and Vincent Lucas(Principal Flute, Berlin Philharmonic/Orchestre National de Paris) among many others.

Seeking a different musical outlet, Ms. Gilly started perfoming in the local Latin scene playing Merengue, Salsa, Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro and eventually Afro Cuban Jazz.  Her love of Latin music led to the formation of the flagship Chicago band, Grupo Cha Cha. Their new CD, “This is The Life”, was released in Summer 2013 with glowing reviews and enthusiastic audience response.  On the CD, 6 out of the 10 tunes are originals and 4 out of the originals were written by the ladies in the band, Janet Cramer(percussion) and Lise Gilly.

Grupo Cha Cha is regularly broadcast on 90.9 WDCB “Chicago’s Home for Jazz” and WBEZ 91.5, the NPR affiliate in Chicago. Grupo Cha Cha has reached national audiences through Latin Jazz radio programs across America including WEMU in Michigan and KPFK in Los Angeles.  Internationally, internet radio stations in France, Britain and Colombia, South America have also broadcast them as featured artists.   Grupo Cha Cha recently played Chicago’s Hispanic Heritage Festival, the Old Town Music School and the Chicago Latin Jazz Festival.

Combining Ms. Gilly’s love for education and performance, Grupo Cha Cha has started presenting interactive Latin music programs to area high schools in Illinois and Wisconsin.  Ms. Gilly is currently the Performing Arts Department Chair at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago where they are ranked 2nd place on the Illinois High School Association’s Music Department list.
